Managing Electronic Game Time With Kids Print E-mail
Written by Jane

My son won a Game Cube in his school's geography bee competition. This is something that I would never have bought for him because I was concerned he would spend too much time with this electronic game. I knew I needed to set limits about how much time he would spend on this activity and I didn't want to get in a constant battle with him over it. So, I developed a system to manage his time.

It works like this: Whatever amount of time he plays with the GameCube, he owes me an equal amount of time doing chores (above the usual). He is not allowed to play GameCube again until that amount of "chore time" has been completed. This has worked extraordinarily well. He will now ask to do his chores, and is finding a real sense of accomplishment in doing them well. Best of all, he limits himself on his GameCube time and is learning how to budget his time.

Instead of a potentially confrontational situation, this developed into one that has been positive and instructive for him, and my house is much cleaner! (Jane, Texas)
