CARTOON STRIPS

Have you ever wondered how the Disney cartoonists create movies such as The Lion King or Lilo and Stitch?  Well now you can be a cartoon artist too!

Materials:
Paper
Markers or Pencils
Stapler

Directions:

Step 1: Cut about 50 little pieces of paper so that they are all the same size.  Make sure that they are rectangular in shape (two sides are longer than the other two sides).

Step 2: Think of an action or a character that you want to put to motion in your cartoon.  Make sure that your character is the type that you can draw on paper.

Step 3: On your first piece of paper, draw the character at the beginning of their motion.  On the next piece of paper draw a very similar picture to the one that you drew on the first piece of paper but vary the picture very slightly.  For instance, if you are drawing a Bear eating some honey, your first picture might be the bear seeing the honey and the second picture might have the arm moving slightly to pick up the honey.  Make sure that they movements that you make from picture to picture are very small.  Continue drawing each picture until your character has completed their action.

Step 4: Now stack all of your pictures in the correct order and staple the left side of the stack of pages together.

Step 5: Hold the stack of pages on the left side (on top of the staple) with your left hand and with your right hand flip through the pages so that you can see your character in motion!

Congratulations!  You are on your way to becoming a famous cartoon artist!

Noise Maker SHAKERS

We made these at camp so you should remember what they are but here are some easy instructions to make your own Shaker at home or to show your friends or your siblings.

MATERIALS:

Paper Plates (2 per shaker)
Popcorn kernels or small macaroni noodles
Stapler
Decorative Materials (markers, crayons, ribbons, etc.)

Directions:

Step 1: Decorate the bottom side of both of the plates.  You can draw on them with Markers or Crayons or put glue on the plates and then cover it with glitter.

Step 2: Take a hand full of the popcorn kernels and place them on top of one of the plates.

Step 3: Put the other plate on top of the plate with the kernels in it so that both of the top parts of the plates are facing inward.

Step 4: Staple the edges of the plates together around the rip of plates.  You can put ribbon in between the plates and then staple the ribbon with the plates when you staple the plates together.

Now make some NOISE!!!!

BEADY CREATURES

Supplies:
Large round beads
Lanyard material, clear is best
Key-chain holders

This project is best done with a kit but you can look at one of the beady creatures that you made at Troy Camp and use that as a model.

Directions:

Step 1: Cut 2 arms lengths of Lanyard material and fold it in half and then tie a knot on the folded end of the material so that you have two free sides of the lanyard material to put beads on.

Step 2: Following your animal model, put the amount of beads that you need for each row.  For each row, put the correct amount of beads on and then with the other side of the lanyard material, string through the beads again beginning with the INSIDE and pull the lanyard outward.

Step 3: Continue with step 2 until you have all of your rows completes and then tie the two ends of the lanyard material together.

STATIONeRY

Materials:
Paper
Decorative Material

This is an easy project but lots of fun.  I know that all of the counselors would love to hear from you Troy Campers and it is always fun to get a letter from a fellow Troy Camper so why not make your own stationary and mail them a letter!  You can create your own personalized design and all of your friends will begin to recognize your patterns.  After you are finished designing your pattern, write notes to your friends, counselors, family members or even you teachers.  They would all love to get a letter from you and to see what a creative artist you have become!

A PHOTO FINISH

I am sure that all of you have some awesome pictures from Troy Camp or have ordered some off the internet…. But what are you going to do with all of these pictures?  How about making your own photo album or special picture frames for your pictures!!!

Materials:
Popsicle Sticks
Glue
Decorative Materials
Paper, construction paper and plain white paper

Picture Frames: It has been pretty hot in Los Angeles lately and I am sure that you have eaten your share of Popsicle this summer.  Next time you eat a Popsicle, save the stick and once you have a few, you can make a frame for one of your beautiful TC pictures.

Step 1: Collect your Popsicle sticks and color them with markers or crayons.  You can also put glitter on them.

Step 2: Form a square with the Popsicle sticks so that the ends of each are touching each other.  Now glue each side together.  Wait for the glue to dry before you glue in your picture to the frame from behind.

Photo Albums: Fold a large piece of construction paper together.  Decorate the front page.  Add the plain white paper to the inside of the construction paper and then staple in the white paper by closing in the construction paper and staple along the folded edge.

PAPER mache PIÑATAS

Materials:
Flour
Water
Large Balloon
Newspaper
Paint and Paint Brushes

REMINDER: This is a VERY MESSY project and takes a few days to complete.  Ask your parent’s permission before you begin.

Directions:

Step 1: Cut the newspaper into 1 inch long strips.

Step 2: Mix 1 cup of flour and one cup of water together.  Stir until all of the flour is dissolved into the water.

Step 3: Blow up a balloon and tie the end.

Step 4: Now take the strips of newspaper and dip them into the flour and water mixture.  MAKE SURE that you take off most of the flour mixture that you put on.  If you do not sponge it off with your two fingers, than your balloon will never dry.

Step: 5 Place the piece of newspaper on the balloon lying it as flat as possible.  Smooth out the paper and continue this until you have covered the entire balloon.  The more layers you add to your balloon, the stronger the balloon will be.  Make sure you leave a little hole so that you can put candy in the hole and use it as a pinata

Step 6: Once you have covered the balloon a few times, let it dry in the sun.  It usually takes about a day or so for the balloon to dry.

Step 7: Once the balloon is dry, remove the balloon from the inside (the balloon should be shriveled up.)  Now you may paint whatever design you choose on the outside of the balloon
